The Summary of By the Great Horn Spoon
The butler, Praiseworthy and his master, Jack, were stowaways on the
Lady Wilma. Back in Boston Jack had heard his Aunt Arabella say to one of her lady friends, “The family fortune is nearly gone now. I can only live one more year before selling my family estate.” So Jack decided he was going to California to mine some gold. But, the very English butler had found out and said he was going. When they got there to buy their ticket, they found that someone had stole it. So, they had to go as stowaways. They saw that if the captain beat the Sea Raven to San Francisco he would get a new ship. So Praiseworthy suggested that they shoveled the coal so the ship would go faster. The captain consented, leaving them to the warm fire.
One day, when it was starting to get warmer, Jack saw a pig he made that pig his friend and named him Good Luck for good luck. One day, while Jack was taking a wash in sea water, the butler suddenly shouted, “I’ve got how we can catch the thief!”
All the passengers were in an assembly on deck. Good Luck was covered in charcoal. Each passenger touched the pigs back. If the pig did not squeal, then that passenger was not guilty. All but one passenger touched the pig. That one was guilty.
The passenger was cut eye Higgins dressed as a “doctor.” He was put to work to shovel the coal which made him sweat for now it was as sunny as summer. Jack didn’t believe that back at home it was still winter! Now that he caught the thief, they needed to find their money the “doctor” hid.
One day, while they were searching in Higgins’s cabin, the captain was smoking on a pipe. Unexpected, a banknote flew out. Cut eye Higgins had hid them in the pipe! Now all problems are solved.
